Flies on the patio, around the barbecue, by the compost bin or in the stable. Indoors a screen or a swat will do, outdoors it will not.
This trap sits outside and does the work itself. Fill the container with tap water, let the lure sachet dissolve in it and put it down. The first flies arrive within two to five hours, and it stays active for about four weeks. One refill catches up to 20,000 flies. When it is full you do not throw it away: you empty it and drop in a new sachet.
Where do you put a fly trap?
Outdoors, and deliberately not next to the table. This is a lure trap, so it attracts flies. Put it away from where you sit: at the edge of the patio, by the compost bin, by the wheelie bins or at the stable door. Five to ten metres is a good rule of thumb. It works better in the sun than in the shade, because warmth spreads the scent.
Why does a fly trap smell?
Because it has to. The lure is made of yeast and protein, and that is exactly what flies go for. A trap that does not smell catches nothing. That is also why you keep it at a distance and hold your breath while emptying it. If you want something odourless for indoors, this is not the product.
How many flies does it catch?
Up to 20,000 per refill. That sounds like an exaggeration until you have emptied one. Under real pressure, such as a stable, a compost heap or a warm week after rain, it fills up in days.
Does it catch bees?
No. The lure works through yeast and protein, and bees and bumblebees do not respond to that; they are after nectar and pollen. The trap only attracts non endangered fly species, mainly houseflies and blowflies.
How quickly do flies reproduce?
Fast enough to get out of hand. A housefly lays hundreds of eggs, and egg to adult takes about ten days in warm weather. That is why they seem to appear all at once in summer. A trap removes the adults before they start the next round.
Why refillable?
Most fly traps get thrown away once they are full. You keep this container and simply replace the sachet. That saves waste and, over time, money. The container measures 200 x 300 x 230 mm and the lure has a three year shelf life.
Can it be used indoors?
Better not. This trap is built for outdoors and that smell belongs in a shed or garden, not in the kitchen. If you have small flies around fruit indoors, go to get rid of fruit flies. If they rise out of your houseplant soil, go to get rid of fungus gnats.
