Pests rarely appear out of nowhere. They seek out specific places that are warm, damp and dark, where food or nesting material is available. Knowing where they hide is the first step to preventing an infestation or spotting one early. These are the seven places you should check first.
1. The kitchen drain
Drains are one of the most underestimated breeding grounds in the home. Food scraps, grease and moisture build up in the drain and create an ideal environment for fruit flies and bacteria. Clean your drain regularly with boiling water or an enzymatic cleaner.
2. The bottom of the bin
The inside of your bin gets emptied regularly, but the bottom and inner walls are rarely thoroughly cleaned. Moisture residue and organic waste attract fruit flies, cockroaches and ants. Wash your bin at least once a month.
3. Overwatered houseplants
Overly wet potting soil is a perfect breeding ground for fungus gnats. The larvae live in the top layer of soil and are barely visible to the naked eye. Let the soil dry out between waterings and use sticky traps to catch the adults.
4. The pantry
Open packets of flour, rice, nuts and dried fruit attract food moths. They lay their eggs in the packaging itself, meaning the infestation comes from outside. Always store dry goods in airtight containers and check new products before putting them away.
5. Cracks and gaps near windows and doors
Silverfish, spiders and small beetles get in through tiny openings. Check the sealing around windows, doors and pipe entry points. A little sealant or a draught excluder already solves a lot.
6. The space behind and under large appliances
The space behind the fridge, under the cooker and behind the dishwasher is warm, dark and rarely cleaned. Food scraps that end up there attract cockroaches and ants. Clean these spots thoroughly at least a couple of times a year.
7. The bathroom
Moisture, warmth and little light make the bathroom a favourite spot for silverfish and mould spores. Ventilate well after showering, repair leaks immediately and regularly check the seals around the bath and shower.
Pests don't choose their hiding spot randomly. By keeping these seven places clean, dry and well sealed, you significantly reduce the chances of an infestation.
