You open your kitchen cupboard and see small moths fluttering away. Or you discover silky threads in your packet of rice or a bag of flour. Chances are you're dealing with food moths. They're one of the most common kitchen pests and can contaminate an entire pantry in no time if you don't act quickly enough.
What are food moths?
Food moths are small moths with a wingspan of about 1 to 2 centimetres. They have a characteristic two-tone pattern on their wings: the front half is yellow-grey, the back half reddish-brown. The adult moth barely eats, but the larvae cause the damage. They work their way through grains, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate, herbs and even pet food.
How do you spot them?
The first signs are often subtle. You see small moths in the kitchen, silky threads in packaging or small white larvae in your dry goods. Sometimes you smell a musty odour in your cupboard before you see anything. If in doubt, always check the backs and corners of your cupboards, as that's where they prefer to lay their eggs.
Where do they come from?
Food moths almost always enter the home via contaminated products. A bag of flour, a packet of nuts or a box of cereal from the supermarket can already contain eggs or larvae without this being visible. Once the packaging sits in a warm cupboard, the eggs hatch and the cycle begins.
What should you do immediately?
Empty your pantry completely and check every product. Throw away anything with silky threads, larvae or a musty smell. Clean the cupboards thoroughly with vinegar or a mild all-purpose cleaner, including the corners and joints. From now on, store dry goods in airtight jars or hard plastic containers.
How do you prevent them?
Never leave open packaging in the cupboard. Use pheromone traps to catch any survivors and detect new infestations early. Check new products before putting them away, especially if bought loose at a market or health food shop.
Food moths are persistent, but with a thorough approach and the right prevention, you can keep your kitchen clean and your provisions safe.
