What works: a trap with a lure next to the fruit bowl or the bin, and clearing the source at the same time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn an independent test by the SAGEA laboratory (report 4540.SAG, September 2021), our trap caught \u003cstrong\u003e84.9 % of the fruit flies within 24 hours\u003c\/strong\u003e. Fruit fly food was deliberately placed in the same room, a metre away, so the flies had a real choice. The traps filled with water alone caught nothing at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe trap weighs 8 grams, lasts up to 30 days, and the lure is made of vinegar and apple juice concentrate. No aerosol, no smell, and no pest control product on your worktop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eDoes an electric insect lamp work on fruit flies?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBarely. That kind of lamp attracts with blue and UV light, and fruit flies hardly respond to it. They follow scent, specifically fermenting sugars. SAGEA placed an electric light trap and our scent trap in the same room (report 6029.SAG, July 2025): the light trap caught 5.5 to 39.5 % of the flies, ours caught 53 to 79 %. With the scent trap beside it, the light trap dropped further to 2.5 to 20.5 %. In almost every case the eggs arrive on fruit and vegetables from the shop. The eggs sit on the skin and are barely visible to the eye. As soon as the fruit starts to ripen, they hatch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow quickly do fruit flies reproduce?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the heart of the problem. A female lays up to five hundred eggs, and the cycle from egg to adult fly takes eight to ten days at room temperature. Two fruit flies become hundreds within two weeks. That is why they seem to appear everywhere at once, and why swatting the occasional fly achieves nothing. You have to break the cycle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat attracts fruit flies?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFermenting sugars. Overripe fruit is the classic, but so is a half empty wine glass, the bottom of a can, the sponge by the sink, a damp cloth and the drain itself. Coffee grounds on their own do not attract them, but a damp coffee bin with residue around it does.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eAre fruit flies dangerous?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey do not sting or bite and they do not pass diseases to people. They do walk over the bin and then over your fruit, so they are not hygienic. The main objection remains that there end up being so many of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow to get rid of them for good\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePut the trap where they are searching, so next to the fruit bowl or by the bin. Clear the cause at the same time: overripe fruit out, bin emptied, sink flushed, fruit in the fridge or under a cover. The trap catches the adults so no new generation follows, while you remove the source.
